Our Surgery Safety Timeline

Every surgery includes strict protocols for keeping pets comfortable and healthy at every stage of the procedure. To make cat and dog surgeries as safe as possible for our patients, we carefully follow these steps:

  • We perform a full physical exam and blood work beforehand to evaluate your pet for any health risks. To ensure that anesthesia will be safe, we need to make sure that your pet is in good condition.
  • Pre-surgical pain relief is provided and an IV catheter placed to deliver fluids and other medications while your pet is under anesthesia.
  • During surgery, your pet is monitored by a dedicated veterinary technician. Vitals monitored include ECG, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation levels, respiratory rate, and pulse oximetry. With our monitoring equipment we can quickly pinpoint and resolve any issues that may arise.
  • After surgery, your pet is monitored and kept warm in our recovery area. We want to make sure that your pet awakens safely and comfortably from the anesthetic.
  • When your pet is awake and able to stand and walk on their own, they can be safely discharged.

Cryosurgery

In addition to traditional veterinary surgery, our doctors can also perform cryosurgery, a noninvasive technique for removing skin growths such as warts, skin tags, and benign tumors. Since these are surface issues, we do not need to anesthetize our patients and perform an invasive procedure to treat them. Instead, we use nitrous oxide to freeze these skin growths. Multiple treatments are usually required to fully remove the affected tissue, but these treatments are completely painless.
